Senior year is a milestone worth celebrating, and what better way to capture this moment than with a stunning senior portrait? I have worked in this industry for over 14 years and I have a few helpful ideas, outfits, and inspirations for you to consider as you head out to look for your Senior Session styles. Whether you prefer classic styles or want to add a personal touch with unique items, shopping for your senior portraits can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Here’s a guide to help you find the perfect outfits and accessories for your session, including some fantastic stores in and around Sacramento.

Classic Styles for Timeless Portraits

When it comes to senior portraits, classic styles are always a safe bet. These styles are timeless and can make your photos look elegant and sophisticated. These styles can help you ease into this special day and help you warm up to being in front of the camera. Being comfortable and confident are our main priority and should be the priority for every senior portrait photographer! Here are a few classic options:

  1. The Little Black Dress (LBD)

    • A simple, well-fitted black dress can never go wrong. It’s versatile, flattering, and perfect for both formal and semi-formal photos… AND WHO SAYS YOUR LBD HAS TO BE BLACK?! There are no rules for your Senior Portraits that says your favorite classic dress look has to be black.

  2. Button-Down Shirt and Jeans

    • A crisp white or pastel button-down shirt paired with well-fitted jeans can create a clean and polished look. Any great blouse with jeans elevates your denim from “every day” to “today is my day”! These are great for headshots for work, your yearbook, and always great to share with family.

  3. Flowy Dresses

    • Floral or solid-colored flowy dresses can add a touch of femininity and grace to your photos. We always encourage our Seniors to have a glam or dramatic look.

  4. Blazers and Khakis or Slacks

    • For a more formal or elevated look, a blazer paired with nice pants and a blouse can exude confidence and maturity. A blazer can turn your casual outfit into a professional style and elevate your personal style.

Incorporate details that are important to YOU!

Incorporating personal items into your senior portraits can make them even more special. Having what is really important to you incorporated into your Senior portraits is so important! These are YOUR images and should reflect your interests, hobbies, and even future goals. Here are some ideas on how to add a personal touch:

  1. Favorite Accessories

    • Bring your favorite hat, scarf, or piece of jewelry to add a unique touch to your outfit.

  2. Sports Equipment

    • If you’re an athlete, consider including your sports gear, such as a basketball, soccer ball, or even your letterman jacket.

  3. Musical Instruments

    • Musicians can bring their instrument to showcase their talent and passion.

  4. Hobbies and Interests

    • If you have a particular hobby, like painting or reading, incorporate related items into your photos.

Consider these 4 things for a Successful Shopping Trip

  1. Plan Ahead

    • Start shopping a few weeks before your photo session to give yourself enough time to find the perfect outfits and make any necessary alterations. We suggest creating a Pinterest board to compile lots of ideas and have a visual for when you’re in the store.

  2. Bring a Friend

    • Shopping with a friend or family member can make the experience more enjoyable and provide a second opinion on your choices. It’s important to remember that if YOU love it, that is what is most important. It’s great to have a second pair of eyes but ultimately you know in your gut what you like and what you want to wear. We love that!

  3. Try Everything On

    • Make sure to try on all the outfits to ensure they fit well and look good in different poses. If you’re not sure, TRY IT ANYWAY!! If you like any of your items be sure to take a picture to share with your photographer! Getting a visual of what you are bringing and the aesthetic you are leaning towards will help your Senior session so much!

  4. Consider the Location

    • Think about the location of your photo session and choose outfits that complement the setting. At your LMCP Fashion Consult, which is included in every level of our Teen and Senior sessions we will determine the locations of your photoshoot

We hope even one of these tips helps you prepare for your Senior Portraits session. Trust us, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect outfits to wear in some incredible Sacramento locations for your senior portraits. Remember to choose styles that reflect your personality and make you feel confident and comfortable. Happy shopping and best of luck with your senior portraits!
